Technical Breakout: Tiling Over Existing Tile
Installing tile over tile is an appropriate solution for many projects. Our speakers will explain how to determine when tile over tile makes sense and discuss proper substrate prep which is key to a successful installation. Tile over tile can reduce waste, dust, and the expense of tearing out an acceptable substrate. Involved in the tile Industry for 33 years, 30 year certified journeyman tile layer, foreman, superintendent, 11 years as apprenticeship coordinator and 15 years as tile instructor for BAC Local 3 CA, now IMTEF Western Region Training Director. Involved in the development of the IUBAC National Tile Curriculum , also involved in the creation and development of the Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT) program. Certified ACT Evaluator and Trainer. Involved in the development of ANSI A108.19 and A108.20 Installation Standards for Gauged Porcelain Tiles and Gauged Porcelain Tile Panels/Slabs as well as providing training to others in the tile industry.
Jim Whitfield
Jim Whitfield FCSI, CCPR, LEED AP is the Director of Technical Services at MAPEI. He is actively involved in the development of tile industry standards on TCNA, ANSI, and ISO committees. Jim is an NTCA Ambassador and a proud member of the NTCA Technical Committee. He is the current President of the MMSA (Materials, Methods and Standards Assoc.). In addition, the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) honored Jim with Fellowship in 2001.
James Woelfel
James is the President of Artcraft Granite Marble and Tile and is Principal of J.G. Woelfel & Associates, an NTCA Recognized Consultant. He is Chairman of the NTCA Technical Committee and sits on the TCNA Handbook and ANSI 108 Committees. As a tireless advocate for industry standards, James is a highly rated speaker at industry shows such as Coverings and Total Solutions Plus. The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) selected James Woelfel as its 2019 recipient of the NTCA Ring of Honor.
